Athlete Bio

Mac Morrin from Kingston, ON, started sailing in the summer of 2004 when his close friend was enrolled in a sailing camp at the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club. His mom decided that it would be good for him to go along with his friend and, after the first day, he was hooked and felt in love with the sport. He spent summers racing the Laser 2 and gaining coaching certification.

Mac continued at Queen’s University in 2010 and continued racing on the Queen’s Sailing Team (QST). In the summer of 2011, he started sailing the 29er with a fellow QST member. He led QST to two national titles as the Team President in 2014 and after graduating he moved up to the 49er class. After two years of sailing the 49er, Mac was admitted to fast-track nursing at Queen’s University and elected to put his competitive sailing on hold. Thirsty to keep active on the water, Mac picked up Kiteboarding from a friend. As an individual sport, Kiteboarding worked well with Mac’s class schedule and Kingston is a perfect place for it. Since then, he enjoys the speed of the hydrofoil and especially the feeling of weightlessness during the 30 knot gybes.

His best memory so far in Kiteboarding is at the US Open Sailing Series held in Miami in January 2023. “I was racing against some pretty high-level riders and, in the last race of the regatta, I sailed a really strong second lap moving from sixth to second place in the race. I remember crossing the finish line feeling really excited. Even though it was just one race, I felt that I had finally broke past a plateau that I had been stuck at for the past six to eight months.”

His goal is to get on the podium at the 2023 Pan American Games and qualify Canada for the 2024 Olympic Games where he is aiming to get in the top 10 with a chance at the podium.

In addition to training and competing in Kiteboarding, Mac Morrin is working full-time as a Registered Nurse, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. After the 2024 Olympic Games, he plans to return to school to become a nurse practitioner.
