CANSail Development Coach Program
The CANSail Development Coach Program is designed for coaches working with competitive sailing programs with a season longer than 4 months at the club or provincial level. Coaches can expect to develop their coaching leadership skills, program & performance planning skills and their technical knowledge of the sport with the aim to better support athletes within the competitive pathway. This program is delivered by Sail Canada in partnership with Provincial Sailing Associations.

The program is separated into three parts:

Nomination, selection & prerequisites
Development Coach Course
Portfolio project, community of practice & mentorship, and evaluation

The Program Offers:

A curriculum designed to support the development of coach leadership skills, program and performance planning skills and technical knowledge in different identified classes.
An introduction to athlete progressions over time, evidence based best practice and performance science, research and innovation (PSRI)
Course delivery and mentorship by experienced professional coaches to support the development of candidate’s confidence and skills.
An introduction to other sailing coaches across Canada and a network of peer learning.
Specific and individual support for the candidate and their program through the portfolio project.
Emphasis on practical on-water coaching at the training clinic.
Final evaluations include training camp and competition elements.
Accreditation as a Sail Canada Coach with Coaching Association of Canada NCCP Competition Development context (with successful evaluation).
Preparation for and a prerequisite for sailing coaches to enter into a National Coaching Institute Diploma program.

Eligible Candidates:

Have previous sail-racing experience (preference for having campaigned a World Sailing-recognized class)
Have a genuine interested in becoming and / or developing personally and professionally as a coach
Have experience as a sailor or coach with Race Team programs
