Mariah Millen was introduced to sailing early in her childhood, was she born and raised on Toronto Island where she spent most of her summers in the water or on boats learning to love the sport. In addition to this, she grew her passion learning from her father John, who introduced her to the sport following his success in his own sailing career as a I14 World Champion, two-time Olympian and bronze medalist at the 1988 Olympic Games.
Mariah went to sailing camp every summer growing up, but in 2014 she discovered how fun racing could be. After two years racing in the 420 class her goal was to represent Canada at the Youth World Championships in the 29er class. She was unsuccessful and lost the trials, but didn’t let this stop her from pursuing her love of sailing. Mariah then contacted her now partner Ali ten Hove in 2016 which was a perfect match from the get go, not only because the duo worked well together, but it also felt destined with both their fathers having sailed at a very high level. Fun fact, Martin ten Hove and John Millen both sailed with the same skipper, Frank McLaughlin, at different Olympic Games
Since teaming up, the team took 5th place at the 2017 Junior World Championships, the 2nd place at the 2016 and 2017 North American Championships, 4th place at the 2019 Pan American Games, and have won many National titles. In 2019, they set a Canadian record finishing 15th place at the European Championships which is the best Canadian performance in this class in an international competition. Then, in 2020, they set a personal best finish of 18th at the 49er FX World Championships.
At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Mariah Millen and her partner Ali ten Hove took the 16th position in 49er FX at their first Games.
