Ben Remocker

Home Club: Royal Vancouver Yacht Club
Class: 49er

Ben Remocker is a 29-year-old Vancouver native with Queen’s engineering and economics degrees. He has been a member of the Canadian National team since 2005 and is also a member the prestigious Paul J Phelan Sailing Foundation (PJPSF), an elite group of athletes pursuing medal performance in Beijing 2008.

Ben crews for skipper, Gordon Cook, a Toronto native with an engineering degree from Queens University. He has been sailing since he was a child at the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. Gordon has been a national team member since 2000.

Gordon and Ben teamed up part time in 2003 and gradually ramped up their campaign. With stints of living and working in Europe while sailing they have been racing and training full time since 2006. The 2007 Worlds was a huge event for the team, qualifying Canda for the Olmpics in the 49er for the fist team ever. It was also their first result in the top 20 at 19th overall. The 2008 worlds saw further improvement to 13th and the team is looking to build on that at the 2008 Olympics in Quindao.

Ben and Gordon have had much support from various charitable organizations in Canada. Making the national team in 2005 was a big stepping stone as the montly cheques from Sport Canada contributed heavily to their paychecks in order to be able to sail more often. In addition, long standing support from their respective yacht clubs, Royal Vancouver and Royal Canadian has been amazing. The club teams massively subsidize youth racing and are instrumental to the development of all of Canada’s Olympic sailors. The Canadian Yachting Association, Hudson’s Bay, Canadian Athletes Now Fund have also contibuted significantly. Besides making the national team the biggest contributions have come from the Phalen Foundation. This unique and highly focussed charity is the single greatest reason for the upswing in Canadian sailing this quadrennial. It is impossible to overstate the importance of the contribution it has made.

Ben and Gordon would also like to thank their one true commercial sponsor.  Samson Ropes have supported the team right from the start of their campaign. Their stuff is the best in the world and they have been involved in helping Canadian sailors for many years now. A big shout out to Randy and David! Cheers guys.
