Over the last few years, CYA and the Provincial Sailing Associations have worked to revise and refine the systems and programs that develop sailors from entry level to competency and to membership of provincial and national sailing teams. Under the framework of Long Term Sailor Development*, every aspect of sailing development has been examined to ensure age and developmental stage-appropriate progression of learning and experience of sailing as a fun and active lifestyle path. We have reviewed and revised, where necessary, the developing sailor competition structure, the make-up of national and provincial sailing teams, the sailing instructor and coach development programs and the sailor learning and development standards.

The revised learn to sail system is called CANSail.  CANSail Programs refer specifically to the delivery of training in dinghies at CYA's member clubs and sailing schools.

With launch of the CANSail Dinghy programming set for the 2012 Sailing School season, the CYA is ensuring that instructor education and the supporting training resources and materials for them to use are prepared for full implementation in 2012.

Here is a look at the progress to date:

CANSail Dinghy Sailing Programs
Expert groups from across the country have worked to review, refine and develop the standards and curriculums of Canada’s Learn-to-Sail and Development Training programs in dinghies.
Provincial Sailing Associations have CANSail School Information Packs (called Club Packs) for your club or school directors and Head Instuctors.

CANSail Instructor Education
The heart and soul of CYA’s programmes are the Instructors who deliver the courses in the Clubs and Schools. Their training courses have been revised to incorporate the principles of the Long Term Sailor Development framework (LTSD).   Currently certified CYA Instructors will be able to transition to the revised system, while potential new Instructors will attend courses delivering the updated training in Spring of 2012.

Master Learning Faciliators and Learning Facilitators
Through Fall 2011 and Winter 2012 CYA Master Learning Facilitators, CYA Learning Facilitators and Program Directors joined other Sail Training experts in symposia where they worked in a hands-on environment to familiarize with the new Instructor and Coach Training courses, shared best practices and engaged in finalizing the resources for the CANSail Instructor and Coach Courses.

Clubs and Schools – Delivering the CANSail Dinghy Programs
CYA member clubs and schools can be serviced with CANSail Dinghy Program Information Packs - available from their Provinicial Sailing Associations. These packs will provide the information needed to promote and deliver the CANSail programs:

  • Sailor Placement Transitions
  • Resource lists for ordering from the PSA
