In preparation for ISAF Nations Cup in Middlefart, Denmark Aug 6-10th, the RCYC crew of Peter Wickwire - helm, Drew Sutherland - main, Hamish Matthew - trimmer, Ali Matthew - pit and Peter Dixon - bow, attended a two day Sally Barkow coached match racing clinic followed by a two day Grade 3 at Oakcliff Sailing Center in Long Island this past Thurs. - Sun. Oakcliff has a 10 boat fleet of Swedish Match 40s which closely resemble the DS37s to be sailed in Denmark next week.
Barkow, an Olympian, a multiple women's world match racing champion and multiple Rolex sailor of the year coached a very productive clinic focused on fine tuning teamwork, communication, timing and positioning. Thursday and Friday began with on shore briefings followed by long days on the water wrapping up with detailed video debriefs.
Saturday and Sunday saw 9 teams compete for the Oakcliff Summer Invitational Grade 3. In difficult and variable conditions on Saturday the team qualified for the semis and finals/petite finals to be sailed Sunday.
When it mattered most the team came together to come back in the semis and run the table winning its last five races on Sunday in convincing fashion to win the event.
The team would like to thank the RCYC members who are supporting us in our Nations Cup effort as well as the RCYC for its match racing program in the Sonars. Without RCYC's Sonar match racing program none of this would be possible.
If you would like to support Team Canada at Nations Cup next week please contact Mike Milner at RCYC for details.
Stay tuned for updates from Denmark starting next week.
